Have you ever stopped and asked yourself how you got to this point in your life? Or why? You could have gone down so many other paths, but for some reason you didn’t. You could have chosen your path, a path that for whatever reason led you to be reading this right now (which I really appreciate, by the way). But think about this: what if you didn’t choose your path at all? What if, just what if, a little thing called fate has been making all the decisions for you?

*clock strikes twelve*

The clocks wrong. Every single day, billions of things happen to billions of people. Two complete strangers are involved in a car crash. A woman finds a lotto ticket on the ground. And a loving couple are forced to see 17 Again, again. Often when these times occur, we often can’t help but wonder......why? Is it fate? Destiny? Luck? Ermm.. *goes to synonyms* Fortune? Chance? Doom? Wait…doom? Not sure about that one…

Anyway, I guess what we ask is: Does Fate Exist?

As a Philosophisationer, and massive Disney fan, I often wonder, am I in control of my life? Or is my life in control of me? I mean, is my life’s destiny already written? Or do I have the power to alter it?

For example, I catch the bus every morning, but let’s say I miss my bus tomorrow, and as a result meet an ah-mazing Italian-American actor named David Henrie, who convinces me to move to Los Angeles with him, where I meet his Italian family, get a job in the family business, then sue a man in cold blood for not paying me on time, eventually take over the family business and run it my way, and ultimately get shot dramatically by the kid down the street’s godfather. Now, is this my fate, my preordained destiny? To be gunned down like a mobster in slow motion?

Well, maybe, but what if I make my bus instead? If I had arrived just a few seconds earlier, and walked through those doors, will it still be my fate to meet David Henrie? Whoa, maybe not. Maybe fate is…fake?

Man on Bus: Hey, you seen Sliding Doors?
Me: Uh, no.
Man: Godfather?
Me: No.
Man: You’d love ‘em. Great films. *walks off*
Me: Okay. That was weird.

SO. Does fate exist? Or is it just a bunch of philosophical mumbo jumbo designed to make us think more than we need to. I mean, how did I even end up talking to you about this overly complicated topic anyway? I mean I tried everything I could to avoid it.

Around six months ago I met a guy to who would “teach me the truth about fate”. I didn’t believe him, so, naturally, I hit him. I was sent a book on “how to explain fate in writing”. I didn’t like that either. Then only two weeks ago, Kim mentioned
“Johanna, maybe we should get a little more fate based material in the next issue.” Buutt, I didn’t really like the sound of that either, so I had to hit her, too.

But even after all that, I still ended up here, telling you about fate! Because you know what? I think telling you about fate, is my fate! ahahahahahahahahwow.

Whether it’s meeting the love of your life at a car crash scene, becoming an instant millionaire, or being forced to see the latest Zac Efron film again, some things are just meant to be.

I’m Jo, an-
David: Sorry, I think you dropped this *hands me my wallet*
and that just totally proved my point.
OH. And sorry Kim, it must’ve been fate!
